В 1937 окончил Высший военный колледж Сухопутных войск [ Army War College]. В 1942 назначен командиром 82-й дивизии; под его командованием дивизия была преобразована в 82-ю воздушно-десантную дивизию [ Eighty-second Airborne], которая в июле 1943 высадилась на Сицилии. В 1944 возглавил 18-й воздушно-десантный корпус [ Eighteenth Airborne Corps] и участвовал в высадке в Нормандии [ D-Day]. Командовал корпусом во время боев в Голландии, Бельгии и Германии, а также оказал мощное сопротивление при контрнаступлении германской армии в Арденнах [ Battle of the Bulge]. В 1946-48 представитель США в Военно-штабном комитете ООН. В 1951 произведен в полные генералы и назначен Главнокомандующим американскими войсками под флагом ООН в Корее, а в 1952 заменил генерала Эйзенхауэра [ Eisenhower, Dwight David (Ike)] на посту Главнокомандующего силами НАТО в Европе. Командовал американскими войсками в Берлине в 1949-51. В конце войны в Корее [ Korean War] командовал 8-й армией сил ООН [UN Eighth Army]. В 1955-59 начальник штаба Армии [ Chief of Staff, Army], в 1962-64 председатель Комитета начальников штабов [ Joint Chiefs of Staff]; на этих постах выступал за развитие обычных вооружений, был инициатором стратегии "гибкого реагирования" [ flexible response]. В 1964-65 посол США в Южном Вьетнаме; первоначально выступал против военного вмешательства США в конфликт, однако позднее поддержал его эскалацию [ Vietnam War].
